NEW CASTLE, Del. — A Delaware City ambulance EMT who was sideswiped by a car near New Castle Saturday has died, fire officials said.

Michelle Smith, 29, with Delaware City Fire Company, was assisting the victim of a motorcycle accident on the side of U.S. Highway 13 at School Lane when they were both struck by a passing vehicle.

According to reports, a 2004 BMW 760 was speeding down the highway, swerved around a BLS unit staging the scene, and struck Smith and motorcycle accident victim Edward Reiss, 30, of New Castle.

Smith was transported to Christiana Emergency Department and suffered from “head, arm, and leg injures.” Smith was previously reported to be in stable condition, sources said.

Police are still looking for the driver of the BMW, who fled the scene.

I'm sorry Susan. Its extremely difficult when you loose a co-worker. I've lost 3, so I understand what you are going through. People don't understand how tight people in EMS can be. It isn't just somebody you share an office with and say hi as you pass by their desk. You depend on each other for your life. You watch each other's back, take care of each other, listen to each other....its a big family. And when you loose one of your family members, its incredibly hard.
