I need some advise or any ideas about a future in EMS. About 5 years ago I got a DUI and effectively ended my career with Guilford County EMS. It was the worst mistake I have EVER made and have since payed dearly. Being a paramedic is the ONLY dream I have ever wanted to accomplish. I was great at my job and possessed enormous potential. My question is: can I ever work within the EMS arena again. I have learned from my mistake and it is a mistake I will never make again. Not being able to serve as a medic is like living without my arms. People make mistakes....I just wonder if they must suffer a lifetime of punishment. Any advise or helpful words would be greatly appreciated.

Jake, don't know if this will help but when I went through my class a few years ago, there was a guy who at the present time still had a suspended license for a DUI and was aloud to take the class, the registry but couldn't get his attendance card to ride on the ambulance until his DUI was served and he got his drivers license back and he has been running since, Mind you we are a volunteer service but we have stiff guidelines where I live, at least it would be worth checking out. Good Luck , Robin

Check with OEMS and see what their current rules are on DWI's. I don't think one isolated incident will knock you out of the field indefinitely but you are probably going to have to be squeaky clean for a lot of years before anyone is willing to take a chance on you again. Which leads with a problem keeping your ConEd up etc, etc...
Good luck
