EMS & Public Safety Fitness/Injury Prevention

Responders, I have been in a few meetings and conference calls with EMS managers, administration and Risk/Safety folks. A common theme continues to emerge 1) medics are generally a lazy bunch with an it’s not gonna happen to me attitude 2) admin. knows they need a fitness and injury prevention program but are afraid to implement one 3) HR and risk management know that injuries in EMS are way to high but fear legal issues 4) I am frustrated at the lack of follow through by 2 and 3 and the lack of commitment by 1. Establish a culture of injury prevention through fitness and wellness, utilize incumbent (old dog) medics to lead the way and the wet behind the ears medics will follow. Admin. must make a stand and not be afraid to get out of their own way to accomplish something that will benefit everyone.

My paying occupation is as a Environmental Health & Safety Manager with disciplines in both General Industry and Heavy Construction. I must state that I whole heartedly agree with establishing a culture of injury prevention through fitness & wellness. I have instituted numerous programs of this type in the construction field and have very successfully reduced the total amount of recordable and lost time injuries to employees and as a benefit to the compaies I have worked for... they had have enjoyed lower insurance cost, a lower EMR rating and a substantial reduction in the workers compensation costs. If some one wants to institute this type of a program, discuss these benefits with the risk people at your company. It is a hugh saving for the company all the way around.
