I had a long conversation today with the Chief of a small town department. He works for a small city paid department nearby and it seems they had their annual PFT. One of the ‘tests’ was to bench press a % of your body weight a certain number of repetitions. He knows of 2 guys who tore their Rotator Cuff (easily out for 9 months) and two more who significantly strained their shoulders.
Really folks, when did laying flat on your back 1) prevent injury 2) improve balance 3) improve…

RP appeals for international help....
Thousands of people fled their homes Saturday as overnight rains brought by tropical storm "Ondoy" caused flooding in wide areas of metropolitan Manila and other provinces of the northern Philippines.
Swollen creeks forced many residents in some communities on to the roofs of their homes and they were calling for help to evacuate, according to local radio reports.

I have a cousin who had
Heart surgery three years ago. He was traveling in Europe last summer and had a heart attack. He was in a remote village and the EMS there was really good. Most of them were volunteer. He did have
Medical travel insurance that covered a large part of the cost. I just thought it was interesting…

CAMDEN, S.C. (AP, WLTX) -- A South Carolina state trooper has been killed during a memorial motorcycle ride to commemorate another trooper killed in the line of duty.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Sid Gaulden said Saturday that 41-year-old Jonathan S. Nash was killed Saturday morning around 10:00 near Camden. He was headed north on U.S. 1 when he was hit by a car pulling out of a parking lot.

Still loving my careeer! I am currently full time at one service. I "landed" at one station! I do still pick up extra days at some of the other stations that our company serves but I guess I have a "home" now...lol I hope all of you are well and enjoying the chance to touch a stranger's life, if only for a few seconds!

Well Responders, now that Labor Day is officially behind us and summer is
winding down it has become that time, once again, to focus on the colder
months of the year. Shorter days and colder weather mean that for most of
us we become less active and that equals fewer calories burned. With
shorter daylight hours our natural body clock or Circadian Rhythm tells us
to sleep more, conserve body fat and lay low. You probably know this as
hibernation! It’s a primal…

As the sirens go silent and the lights turn dim, know that I did my job till the very end.
I have answered the last call. Know this Lord that I was always there for a stranger, family member or friend.
I have always fought the good fight, and with each time I have sacrificed alittle of myself. I have carried the memories of all those who you took from this world, no matter what I did. I have lived with the voices of there loved ones crying out in pain, sadness and sorrow. Never…

Just so all my responder friends do not get the idea that I spent an idle holiday weekend relaxing on the lake I added 32 pages of new content to the Fit Responder Book and expanded the program. I added a substantial section on Nutritional tracking. Tracking what you consume every day will lead to healthier eating habits and thus reduced weight. I included a weeks worth of daily tracking logs and wellness goals. I also drastically expanded the resistance band section of the program. Everyone…

I recently had a patient that had in their left arm 124/82 and in their right arm 167/91. The whole trip to the hospital they both stayed with in the ranges stated. I was told this is a common medical condition. So when I arrived with the patient, I asked the nurse about this and anyone else at the ER what the name of this condition was.....No one could remember what it was called! Can you believe it?! No one in the ER, Doctor or nurse could tell me, only that it was a medical condition that…

If you are like most of us, grabbing a quick burrito seems like a good way to get a semi-healthy meal. Did you know that a chicken burrito with rice, beans and cheese has
1200 calories!
57 g of Fat
56 g of Protein
Responders, we only need 30g of protein every 3-4 hours, the rest takes it’s toll on your kidneys and will convert to fat if not burned. Many diets are based on 2000 calories per day, this baby has almost a full days calories in ONE serving,…

What is a Paramedic?
Next To Creating A Life The Finest Thing A Man Can Do Is Save One — Abraham Lincoln.
A paramedic is the closest thing to a doctor the public will ever see outside the hospital. Let’s face it; doctors don’t do house calls anymore. Besides, they don’t teach doctors or nurses to deal with the chaos and limited resources of the streets. Being a paramedic is 25 % rescue work, 25% social worker, 25 % street smarts, 25% medicine, and 100% being quick and…
