Today I finished up my confined space rescue training. I'm proud to say that I did well and I had the opportunity to train with some great guys and great instructors. However, training on CSR truly gives a whole different perspective on the sitaution. Where people get impatient and complain about what's taking rescuers so long to get a victim out, they truly don't know all that goes on. Typical people don't know that the air sat. levels have to be monitored,…

I need some advise or any ideas about a future in EMS. About 5 years ago I got a DUI and effectively ended my career with Guilford County EMS. It was the worst mistake I have EVER made and have since payed dearly. Being a paramedic is the ONLY dream I have ever wanted to accomplish. I was great at my job and possessed enormous potential. My question is: can I ever work within the EMS arena again. I have learned from my mistake and it is a mistake I will never make again. Not being able to serve…

Go to http://sherryjonesmayo.com to see an excerpt of "Confessions of a Trauma Junkie; My Life as a Nurse Paramedic" which was just released last month. It is a book with true vignettes (some names changed to protect the guilty) that shares the innermost feelings of some emergency services workers as they encounter trauma, tragedy, redemption and a little humor (and irreverence, of course). It was written by one who has been there as a medic on the road and RN in a trauma center in Detroit as…

My Daughter's Future With Boys
A Fireman's Little Girl
I am very dedicated to my work. I wear firefighter shirts every day, even when I'm not on duty. The fire department is my second home, and my second family. It often seems as if my life revolves around the fire department, but it means nothing compared to my little girl. I am normally a very friendly person, but if you hurt my little girl you will make me…

Rules of EMS:
1.Skin signs tell all
2.Sick people don't bitch
3.Air goes in and out, blood goes round and round, any variation on this is a bad thing.
4.About 70% of the battery patients more than likely deserved it.
5.The more equipment you see on a EMT's belt, the newer they are. The more patches someone has on their jacket, the fewer actual patients they have ever seen. If they have instructor rockers, they have probably NEVER seen a…

Believe it or not, many instructors/managers do not see games as a serious teaching tool. It may be hard to admit, but, in some ways, they’re right! In most cases, their beliefs have been influenced by a variety of factors, the most common of which is their personal experience seeing how games are used in a classroom. To make matters worse, many instructors who use games are unknowingly reinforcing the negatives that so many have about using games.
In this article, I will show you…

Here is a picture Of a car accident. I had to write a paper on what I thought happened, what the injuries were of the driver and passenger, what I would have done to treat the patients, how I would transport them. I knew NOTHING about this accident before I wrote this paper. I am the Lead EMT on scene and I am to figure it out. What do you think, How did I do? I would LOVE feedback!!!!…

When Michael Jackson went into cardiac arrest, rescuers took him to a place known for bringing the dead back to life. A world-renowned surgeon at the UCLA Medical Center has pioneered a way to revive people that most doctors would have long written off, including a woman whose heart had stopped for 2 1/2 hours.
Tested on a few dozen cardiac arrest patients, 80 percent survived. Usually, more than 80 percent perish.
"They took people who were basically dead, not all that…
