Twas the night before xmas EMS/fire version

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the station,

All was quiet except for our snoring Dalmatian.

Our boots had been placed by the bunksides with care,

In hopes that the shift change would finally be here.

The lights were turned down and the TV was off,

The rigs had been washed and the floors had been mopped.

Firemen and Medics lie nestled in bed,

While visions of homelife danced through their heads.

When out of the darkness, arose ringing… Continue

Participating in the 2009 National EMS Memorial Bike Ride

Hey guys, starting my kick off to raise money for LODD EMS brothers and sisters. Each year there is a Memorial Bike Ride from NYC to Roanoke, VA where on the last day we participate in the actual annual memorial service. I will be riding this May 16th through the 22nd. I will be riding in memorial of K.C. Chessire who lost his life this past December. He was an EMT with our service, Lifeguard Ambulance of Santa Rosa County, on the panhandle of Fl. I haven't seen any other particpants from the… Continue

The EMS Labor Movement - or Lack Thereof? What's the story?

Many of the posts on this network site, and others, bemoan the plight of poor, overworked, underpaid, and under-respected EMS providers.

Yet, the EMS community does not seem to have an active labor movement working to improve this environment.

I must confess that I'm not a union guy - I'm a chief in a right-to-work, no collective bargaining for public employees state. So the situation probably works to my advantage - maybe. But I am curious.

It seems that much… Continue

The Laws Of EMS Work

The First Laws of EMS:

All emergency calls will wait until you begin to eat, regardless of the time.

The EMS Law of Gravity:

Any instrument, when dropped, will always come to rest in the least accessible place possible.

The EMS Law of Time and Distance:

The distance of the call from the hospital increases as the tme to shift change decreases.

Corrollary 1- The shortest distance between the station and the scene is under… Continue

A very sad day

Have ya ever gottin up to go to work and not really feel like going in? Ya just have that feeling that something just isn't right bout that day and ya just don't want to deal with it?

Well I had that day yesturday. It was a day that all of us in the EMS regret ever having to deal with.

The day started out at 2a.m. waking up two hours earlier than I had to to go to work. Kind of sucked couldn't really figure out why I had woke up so early and couldn't go back to sleep. Nothing unusualy… Continue

R.I.P. Mark Davis

As some of you may know, in the middle of nowhere, on the Canadian border, an EMT named Mark Davis was shot and killed while responding to a chest pain call. For those of you who don't, well, now you do. Our community is really small...like really really small. We had an amazing amount of support over the last week from squads, corps, and agencies across the nation. Once I have gotten my hands on some more of the pictures, I will be posting them up here. You all will get to see what an amazing… Continue

This is really cool

I should preface with I can't stand country music. It makes me nauseated. I can't relate. I don't own a truck, a dog and I haven't lost my girl but this is really cool. Check it out. It may take a minute to load but listen to it and tell me what you think ===>http://tinyurl.com/9enw2o

I can't say I have never used FDGB in a written report...

To: All EMS Personnel From: Chief of Operations

Subject: Proper Narrative Descriptions

It has come to our attention from several emergency rooms that many EMS narratives have taken a decidedly creative direction lately. Effective immediately, all members are to refrain from using slang and abbreviations to describe patients, such as the following:

1) Cardiac patients should not be referred to as suffering from MUH (messed up heart), PBS (pretty bad shape), PCL… Continue

Commendation Letter I got today :D

February 2, 2009

Dear Jim, Kyle, Mike, & Bobby,

I have received word of a call that happened over the weekend in which you as a crew did an outstanding job. This call was challenging to say the least considering the extrication logistics and language barrier. 199 MICU and Ambulance 198 were on scene for 17 minutes during which time your hearing and speech impaired patient was assessed, treated, two 12-leads were obtained and transmitted, command… Continue

EMS Connect..huh? Neato!

So I'm roaming around the web, like always, and I decide hey lets go to Facebook. So I click over expecting the usual; gossip, whining, and general friend connecting. Amongst all of this clicking I saw an advertisement for this place called EMS Connect. I thought to myself "hmm...interesting" and clicked the ad. Now this ad could be anything; it could be an awesome undiscovered site or it could range something on the line of a hidden satanic cult or porn site (this is the net after all).… Continue
