"'sketchy' knees now will most likely lead to injured knees sooner rather then later. I strongly encourage you to prehabilitate your legs with self massage techniques, stretching and hip strengthening exercises to support the knee joint.…"

EMS & Public Safety Fitness/Injury Prevention

Responders, I have been in a few meetings and conference calls with EMS managers, administration and Risk/Safety folks. A common theme continues to emerge 1) medics are generally a lazy bunch with an it’s not gonna happen to me attitude 2) admin. knows they need a fitness and injury prevention program but are afraid to implement one 3) HR and risk management know that injuries in EMS are way to high but fear legal issues 4) I am frustrated at the lack of follow through by 2 and 3 and the lack…See More

Core and Spine Strength

Responders, this week I feel it appropriate to include one of myfavorite exercises. I qualify it as an ‘everything’ exercise. Thismovement conditions the body as a whole and teaches the ‘core’ and spineto stiffen. This will allow us to resist the forces that cause injurywhile maintaining a stable posture. If a kettle bellis not available use a dumbbell or simply the floor. Hold for 5 secondseach rep. DO NOT allow your…See More

To Crunch or Not to Crunch?

A great article on one of the ‘gurus’ of spine biomechanical research, a lot of his data was used in designing the Fit Responder Program. After three decades of figuring how out the spine works, Stuart McGill has come to loathe sit-ups. It doesn’t matter whether they are the full sit-ups beloved by military trainers or the crunch versions so ubiquitous in gyms. “What happens when you perform a sit-up?” he asks. “The spine is flexed into the position at which it damages sooner.”The professor of…See More
