I actually stumbled across this web site a few days ago through an article on Facebook about a "new" way to commit suicide. The article caught my attention because it mentioned that one of the two most recent cases involving this "new" method was about two miles from my home. Not so much of a big deal except that the city and county that I live in are so far outside metro Atlanta and so small that the PD consists of one officer on duty each shift and the County Fire/EMS station runs about 4 calls per week. The article was about two men (one in California and one in my home town) who had both utilized this "new" technique which consists of obtaining two materials sold freely over the counter anywhere (one is Bonide...an insecticide used on fruit trees and the other is hydrochloric acid), mixing them together in a relatively enclosed space and inhaling the fumes. The article pointed out that it seems to be a very painless death due to how quickly one passes out as soon as the two materials are combined and toxic fumes are released. The article went on to read that cardiac arrest follows very, very quickly. In the two cases mentioned the men conducted the act inside their vehicles. They went to the extent of taping the vents closed and also along the door cracks in order to contain the fumes inside the vehicle. The case near my home went to a small parking area next to Lake Alatoona and was found the following morning. Whatever your views on suicide are, I have to give these two credit for taping a note to the window alerting whoever discovers the "guy who apparently fell asleep in his car" detailing the severe danger of opening the vehicle. Had they not left those notes, whoever (PD, FD, EMS, nosy civilian, whatever) made any sort of attempt to open the vehicles would have been exposed to the toxic fumes themselves and become contaminated and quite easily fallen victim to the same result. Wearing 'standard' PPE is not enough...gloves, eye protection, gowns, and disposible face masks are not enough to protect yourself!!! After reading the article I have contacted all of my PD, FD, and EMS contacts and warned them about this. Not a single one of them had heard about (we will just call it a "technique"). If it happened where I live you can be sure that it will be popping up on the radar more and more. So stay alert if you catch that call regarding the "unconscious person in a vehicle".
