First 6 months have been tragic...need to know im not alone
Hi ok it’s been awhile since I’ve been here, but to my fellow rescuers I need some sense of not being in this alone. I remember my EMS instructor telling our class this. Your first call my very well determine the type of career you will have. In my case my very first call was a plane crash (lucky me). Anyways to make a longer story shorter I have experienced a lot of grief. More than normal I would think. I’ve responded to a childhood friend whom I went to college with was shot 12 times in his torso and abdomen. He happened to be in my zone area. A few months after I worked one of the biggest MVC disasters in Florida history. I-75 here in Gainesville where 12 people died. I’ve seen a lot and experienced a lot in my first 6 months as I said and I just need to know that I’m not alone.

When you are training, you are taught things in a linear manner - your career will not be like that. Your first six months have been marked by very serious emergencies - your next six may be lesser emergent calls. You'll find your sea legs in this business. You;ll find out after a while that it may not be the severity of the calls that gets to you, it may be little things - someone reminds you of a family member or a loved one, etc. It can make you feel alone and agitated and at time, inhuman. You are not. You always have people.
Beyond generalities, what has been bothering you about these first six months?
