A question was posed to me yesterday.  There is plenty of research and documentation regarding distracted drivers --> due to music, cell phones, texting, etc.

But what about EMS? Do you think that there is an issue regarding distracted EMTs and medics while driving an ambulance?

For those managers out there, does your driving policy tackle this issue? With twitter, facebook, texting, etc. available on any cell phone, it would seem to be a growing concern.

I think it is very dangerous. Unfortunately, as a supervisor riding alone in a buggy, I have to change channels on the radio, answer two phones, listen to two radios.... Good grief! Soooo glad I don't have to text.
I agree that not doing anything on the cell phones while driving is of the utmost importance, especially when there is a patient in the back. People have no idea what type of a distraction cell phones are. Talking on the radio is a different story however, because this can be a necessity and can be done safely if trained properly. Typing on the MCT should only be done if absolutely necessary and if there is no patient being transported, there is no reason why your partner can't do the typing.
